Campaign 2009
Following the recent General Elections and in response to the widespread disgust and outrage as expressed by the citizens of the Commonwealth of Dominica with regard to the fraudulent nature of the elections, we the United Workers Party make the following statement:
The United Workers Party has taken an executive decision that in light of the gross and unprecedented irregularities, fraud and breaches of the Laws of Dominica in this General Election, as conducted by the Dominica Labour Party on December 18th 2009; it will boycott the parliament for the following reasons:
- The unprecedented use of bribery to unlawfully influence the election results;
- The denial of the opposition of access to the state owned media which rendered the elections grossly unfair and;
- The paid movement of large numbers of overseas based persons as an inducement to vote, which substantially distorted the results of the 2009 elections in an unfair and illegal way.
Political bribery of any kind is against the laws of Dominica under the House of Assembly (Elections) Act Chapter 2:01, Volume 2-4 Section 55. The Dominica Labour Party has conducted the elections in a manner that flagrantly disregarded these provisions.
Notwithstanding the civility of the conduct of the actual operations of the voting process on elections day, the pervasive illegal and fraudulent acts as set out above, effectively vitiated the legitimacy of the voting process.
We demand:
Fresh general elections under an immediately cleansed electoral list and electoral reform to render the process of voting free and fair.
In the meantime the United Workers Party will boycott this parliament as illegitimate until our demands are met.
We the United Workers Party also issue a call to all patriotic citizens and institutions to come together to prevent a creeping dictatorship from wiping out the democratic rights and freedoms of the people of Dominica which have been fought for, for so long.
Mr. Ronald Green
Political Leader
